Mike Pic Poe Looks Better With No Face
Posted by on March 23, 2005 - 7:21 a.m. (and again the next day)

I give Drew a hard time about never saying anything, so I should at least try to put up a little blurb in addition to that thing up there (though, you'd think the writer would write more, jab jab jab).

The especially acute may have noticed a marked difference in what Drew wants in a comic versus what I want in a comic. I suppose this is a classic argument. The problem is that I'm not especially fond of drama, particularly romantic drama. You might say that I abhor it, want little to do with it, and stop caring about anything involving it when I can. For instance, (note: watch as I alienate half our readers) anyone out there read Megatokyo? Those who don't know me may not realize I am webcomics fanatic, I browse through about 30 each day, and I'll stay up until well past sunrise the next day to read the entire archives if a particular comic catches me (e.g. Sluggy Freelance, Scary Go Round). I caught Megatokyo as it was just starting up (back when there were less than a bazillion web comics around) and I was hooked. It was appealing at the time; I was into games, anime, all that stuff, and that's more or less what it was about. Then Largo, the writer, left, and things changed. Now it's about the two male leads pining after the two female leads, and oh God is it aggravating (mainly just the main guy's, actually, because he never does anything). I pretty much only read it out of habit now. I'm not saying it's a horrible, he probably has the second largest webcomic readership in existence, I'm just saying that ninety percent of the time it's not my cup of tea.

Now, I'd actually enjoy MT more if it were everyday, but that's clearly ridiculous for a comic that large, especially when money doesn't come from the comic, it comes from hours put into the merchandising and advertising. To sum up, drama doesn't go well with intermittent updating. Now, MT is three times a week. Us? With classes, We're lucky if we hit three times a month (wow, that's depressing when you say it). Looking back to the beginning, when we did update 2-3 times a week, I remember that the comic was almost all I did, every day. That's kind of ridiculous. I'll probably never have that much free time again in my life (side note: if you're in middle school or high school and almost all you do is play video games, find something else immediately, or you'll later realize you've wasted the first fifth of your life). I've learned a ton, but I still end up putting the same amount time into each comic. I've considered alternatives, such as only pencils, only grays, etc., but nothing works how I want it to.

So, drama and monthly (*wince*) updates don't mix well for me, which is why I favor the humorous side. There's an interesting dilemma here though, because I grew up on strips like Foxtrot, Overboard (when it was actually funny), Dilbert, and the like, and these are all extremely simple yet delicious, artistically. Two of my favorites today, The Whiteboard and Help Desk, are the same way. Hell, the Help Desk guy has a single template for each character he's just copied and pasted for nine years, the characters don't move, and it works extremely well. The problem is, I can't do this here because our characters (hopefully) normally have expressions and stand in appropriate poses, so I end up drawing Chris and Omar standing slightly differently ninety-thousand times in the same comic. In short, as much as I detest drama, it makes the comic a million times more interesting to draw. Humph.

So, having complained about doing both drama and humor, I've now accomplished nothing, and in an inordinately disorganized fashion. Fantastic. I don't know when the next update is, as I should get back to work on my school stuff (three and a half day before break ends, eggggh). So, go read those comics I mentioned.

Oh, as a side note, there's some junk in the gallery I've been doing for practice. My mechanical pencil no longer likes me after those. [Minor update: one more]

On Little Sister's birthdays, which are scary things, since it means that they're one step closer to being an adult and unleashing themselves on the world...

Since I know you actually read this quite regularly, happy 16th birthday Erica. :)

UPDATE, March 21
Mike has aparrantly replaced the glowy pic(evil.jpg) with a newer, more high-res version. Therefore my image is now (super)evil.jpg. mwahahahahahaha!

184. Video: Edith and I are up late studying for midterms watching crazy German music videos from the 90s. I'll miss college.
183. Video: Edith, the darling lass pictured above, will be performing this later this semester. I'm not sure what the protocol is when you find out your girlfriend is a zombie, but I guess I'm glad to have advanced warning that she'll be eating my brains at some point.
182. Video: Women in Western Art. Pretty niftay.
181. Comic: Copper is updating again! Glee!
180. Japanese Insanity Guitar Bear Pink Japan: WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?
179. Video: Pac Man invasion. Old, I guess, but still required viewing.
178. Comic: Piled Higher and Deeper: So awesome! Also makes me not want to go to gradschool. Though, it worked out for my dad anyway, so who knows.
177. Artist: JF Bruckner: Oh yeah, jfb is awesome too! Right, right, more artists and comics, I forget so easily...
176. Comic: Copper: Copper is my favorite webcomic. Every strip is inspiringly beautiful and bursting with imagination, but beyond that, they consistently resonate with profundity without screaming "Look at ME, aren't I profound!?" I tried to write a lot more corny praise, but just go read all of them instead, you won't be sorry. I was hoping to wait for Kazu Kibuishi to get back to it so I could scream about its return, but it's been quite a while already, so I'll just link it again once that happens.
175. Artist: Mitsui. Life must be hard when you're this awesome. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
174. Comic: The Unfeasible Adventures of Beaver and Steve. I don't actually read this often, but the toaster knob makes me want to. That sentence will make no sense as soon as they update.
173. Humor: Kyle linked me to this, but I can't imagine why. P.S. Kyle sucks.
172. Comic: Socks. Okay, Socks is also amazing. I need to read through both these soon. Yargh.
171. Comic: Minus. Leo just linked me to minus, and it is aggggghjustgoreaditIcan'tthinkofwhattowriteitisamazing.
170. Flash Game: Fancy Pants. Fancy Pants!!! Made me want to drop everything and make an awesome speedy platformer with simple but incredibly smooth smooth animation with my roommates. Who knows what they'd do, but Kyle already agreed to it. Right Kyle? Study for your midterms to signify "yes."
169. Random: Revenge of Zoom Quilt.
168. Comic: Sinfest. How could you not know about Sinfest already? :|
167. Apps: doPdf. People keep asking how to write out pdfs. If you don't own Acrobat Pro, apparently this works.
166. Humor: Then Japan puts Berkeley to shame in the flash mob arena. But c'mon, it's Japan, it's probably weird when stuff like that doesn't happen.
165. Humor: Berkeley ninja flash mob battle royale round 1 fight.
